I’m proud of my parents. Black History Month special.

Yeah I said it. I’m proud of my parents. They’ve come a long way.

This isn’t the ‘my parents are my heroes’ post. I admire their accomplishments through the mistakes they have made in their life. No matter how close I am or what you say, I don’t want to be anything like them. 🙂  Unless we’re talking about the characteristics of courage, discipline, curiosity, and perseverance. I want to embody all of those.

This is where Black History Month comes in. My parents are part of the baby boomer generation which should be retitled to the beta test generation. Though they did not fight the civil right battle, they had to stand through the faulty and minimally fair legislation that followed. And even though things are running smoother for us Millennials, there are a lot of new battles to fight surrounding civil rights in America. These characteristics of courage, discipline, curiosity, and perseverance have turned into pillars for me. I don’t look on them as characteristics that my parents once had, but ones they currently display.

I’m proud of my parents because something I could never call them is hypocrites. They live everyday by what they taught us- that is discipline. You get up every morning and go to work. You help as many people as you can, all of the time. You are not just successful one day of your life but everyday. It may have taken a lot of weekends pushing product at flea markets to learn this lesson but I did. Riding with my mother an hour and spending the night at the campus library with her while she studied for her MBA, that was discipline, I saw it first hand.

Curiosity may be something that you think you can live without, but without it you will never see life. The status-quo is always given but my parents always challenge us to think differently. What if it can be accomplished with less resources? What are the best three options? Always ask because the worse they can say is no. I struggle with the courage to ask the question sometimes. They’ve mastered it, it is their art. They have the courage to be curious which lets them engage the world in a way the is inspirational to me and many others. The courage they have to run their own business, stand up to authority, and do things that ’50’ somethings don’t do, that courage is inspirational.

Perseverance has made them historical. They have made a lasting impact on our community through their work. I’m proud of my parents. And this Black History Month I would like to recognize them for their efforts of connecting the black community, serving our country, and educating our community on black history. I love you all!
